SearchGPT: AI-Powered Search Engine by Open AI

OpenAI announced SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine that is a direct competitor to Google search.

What does that mean for Google?

What does it mean for web publishers?

This is the first time in a very long time that I can remember a company with enough funding and tech experience to challenge Google’s search dominance.

This news is fresh and we are still determining how SearchGPT will impact search and publishers; however, some nuances are worth discussing.

The new AI search platform is in the testing phase.

Open AI team has partnered with publishers to build this experience and continue to seek their feedback.

In addition to launching the SearchGPT prototype, they are also launching a way for publishers to manage how they appear in SearchGPT, so publishers have more choices, unlike Google.

Importantly, This platform is about search and is separate from training OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models.

Websites and blogs can be surfaced in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training.
